Focus
Surely Summer can’t be over so soon? Hopefully not! In spite of recent rain and lower temperatures there is plenty of time left for more sunshine. However, August is the month when the schools return and, soon after that, Colleges and Universities. And by now most of us have had our Summer Holiday. Hopefully then we will feel invigorated.
Likewise some of the Services have had a break - soon to begin again. On the other hand there have been ‘extra’ events such as AYC and other camps and missions for which we continue to pray.
There are two aspects of believers health that need to be carefully looked after. Hopefully the Summer has been good for both.
Firstly there is our physical health. There is no doubt that spiritual fitness is prominent eg. 1 Tim. 4:8 “Bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable in all things”. However our physical condition is important. In the Lord’s service, whatever it is, mental and physical exhaustion can often set in. That’s why in Mark 6 the Lord recognised the disciples’ exhausted condition and invited them to “come aside and rest awhile”. We need to rest - especially those who serve Him week after week and especially day after day.
Likewise spiritually. We can only stay fresh and energised by spending time with Him. - the source of our spiritual food and refreshment.
Hopefully we all benefited in our ‘holidays’ by finding more time to rest our bodies and be with Him for the refreshments of our spirits.
John has this balance in view when he could write
“Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in HEALTH, just as your soul prospers.” (3 John 1:2).
