Verse of the Month

"He is altogether lovely.  This is my beloved, and this is my friend."

Song of Solomon 5:16

Focus

Surely we must agree with the writer of the Song that our Lord is ‘altogether lovely’.  His description in Song of Sol. ch. 5 is quite amazing and contains much for our meditation.  One part of the body which is not usually associated with beauty or loveliness is the feet; yet they are the ‘bases of fine gold’ on which the whole figure stands.

When we think of the One who was annointed “to preach the Gospel to the poor” (Luke 4) the words of Isaiah as quoted by Paul came to mind “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things” (Roms. 10)  His feet were indeed beautiful.

Yet these feet became one of the symbols of His suffering for “they pierced my hands and my feet” (Psalm 22).  After His resurrection He could say to His disciples “Behold my hands and my feet” (Luke 24).
There are many references to the Lord’s feet in scripture, which are worthy of study.  One in particular which challenges us all is found in Luke 7.  There we find His feet are a place of worship.  In the story two people display their appreciation of Christ or lack of it.  Which of these is closer to our spiritual appreciation of Him, Simon or the woman?

Luke Ch. 7

In the house of Simon the Leper
As the Saviour sat down to eat
A woman who was a sinner
With spikenard anointed His feet.

In trembling she stood right behind Him
No shadow she cast on her Lord
As she rained her teardrops upon them
Blessed feet of the one she adored.

She cared not that Simon was saying
“This woman’s a sinner we know.
Why did this prophet not stop her
From wasting the good ointment so?”

The Saviour then turned round to Simon,
“This woman ‘s more worthy than thou.
You gave me no  water or ointment
For washing my feet or my brow.

‘Twas her love for me made her do it,
Not seeking applause or reward.
She was simply paying me homage
And quietly confessing me Lord.”
