The grey hair is starting to take over but I have been thinking about new beginnings lately. Sadly it seems like everyone around me is facing big challenges, health, stress, job worries, family cares, the list goes on.
It is easy at times like this to let gloom take hold and to see only the problems. To take them to heart and try to weather the storm as best we can. As with many things in life the Christian perspective is different and sometimes hard to understand.
James writes in the bible:
"Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything..."
This is not that we are enjoying the trial or that we can simply persevere and everything will be OK. Rather it is that we know that God's plan for us is better than any we could have for ourselves and he is working out that plan through the circumstances of our life.
We will not naturally adopt this view but in the same way that we can only get to heaven by placing our trust in what he has done to get us there we can only live in his power by trusting in his care for us on the way.
James goes on to say:
"If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you."
May we find maturity, wisdom and completeness in trusting him.
