Merry Christmas

James Grayston

Have you heard about the Christmas when the hills were alive with the sound of music? The story is in the Bible - it was the first Christmas.

Let me ask you – ‘Did angels sing in the sky when you were born?’ Most unlikely! Your family rejoiced, neighbours added their congratulations, but I don’t think angels appeared to announce your birth!

How many times in the history of the human race have they sung at the birth of a baby? Only once, to our knowledge, when Jesus, the Son of God, was born at Bethlehem about 2,000 years ago.

Does this not tell us that Jesus was special, in fact, He was quite unique? Listen to the angelic words as they announced details of the One who had been born -

‘Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord’ Luke 2 v 10, 11

Exactly what we need! A saviour, a rescuer, One who can reach us in all our sin and need. How is Jesus qualified to be our saviour? He died on the cross to save us. The angels are telling us that this was the very purpose for which He was born. ‘Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners’, we are told elsewhere in the Bible.

How does He save us? When we put our trust in Him. ‘By grace you have been saved through faith’, one Bible writer said.

However, If I am to be saved, I must first realise that I am lost, and being lost is sadly the plight of the whole human race as portrayed in the Bible. Like the lost sheep in the parable which Jesus told, I am the lost one needing to be found & rescued.

So to those who are lost because of sin, separated from God who is righteous, the message of Jesus our saviour comes to us today with freshness and a loving appeal from God who sent His Son for us. Jesus is a saviour, but has He saved you?

Listen to the words of Mary many years ago ‘My spirit rejoices in God my saviour’.

Is He YOUR saviuor?

This Christmas may we all know the reality of Jesus Christ and His saving power in our lives!
