Luke Chapter 1:30-33
"........ but the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”
The bible tells us that at the appointed time, "God sent his son". Not as some would suggest to be a good teacher or a spiritual leader or even a wonderful healer - although all of these he was. No, the bible is clear on the reason that God's son, Jesus, came to earth. He came to die. He came to save his people. The name Jesus means ' the Lord saves. Another name given to Jesus was Immanuel , which means God with us. Charles Wesley's great Christmas Hymn, "Hark the herald angels sing" sums it up perfectly - " Veiled in flesh the Godhead see, hail the incarnate Deity, pleased as Man with men to dwell, Jesus our Immanuel."
