A modern Christmas song today, this one written by a band called Downhere. The song itself became a personal favourite of mine and the chorus has a message to convey:
"How many kings, stepped down from their thrones?
How many lords have abandoned their homes?
How many greats have become the least for me?
How many Gods have poured out their hearts
To romance a world that has torn all apart?
How many fathers gave up their sons for me?
Only one did that for me"
When we think of Christmas we might picture the traditional Christmas card Nativity scene: an array of figures standing around a tiny defenceless baby. Although this is true, what this picture fails to capture fully is the magnitude of what has just taken place. The God who created the universe chose to send his Son down to Earth, living his life in relative poverty so far detached from the splendour of his Kingdom. And why did he do this?
"All for me, all for you."
Philippians 2: 9-11:
9Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
