Significant

James Grayston

The population of the world currently sits way beyond 7 billion. Every second the global population increases by another 3 people. Back in the 1960’s, the average life expectancy was 51 years whereas now its 69 years and at the current rate of growth, it is predicted that in the next 13 years the population will have increased by another billion.

I guess listening to facts like that can make us feel pretty insignificant. I’ve recently been really challenged by the fact that even although there are more than 7 billion people on this earth, every single one of us is important to God. Psalm 139 v 14 says “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

Last month at work, I had the amazing privilege of delivering babies. Every time another baby was brought into the world I would feel a lump at the back of my throat as I was just in awe at this tiny little person in front of me and how they were so perfectly formed. That verse in Psalm 139 would always spring into mind when the baby gave its first cry. It also made me think of what an awesome creator God is.

As a baby grows in its mother’s womb, the mechanisms that allow it to develop are so intricate. For example, the lungs of a developing foetus don’t need a blood supply as there is no oxygen going to them. As a result of this, there is a tiny hole in the heart that diverts blood from going to the lungs to go around the rest of the body which needs it more. However when a baby is born and takes its first breath, blood rushes to the lungs and back to the heart where that small hole closes over so blood can get to the lungs effectively from then on.  And to think that this is only one of thousands of things that happen as a baby is formed and God controls them all for every single child born.

A verse in the Bible that I find amazing is Luke 12 v 7: “Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered.” As well as knowing how many hairs each of us have, he knows the very number of any given hair on our head. God cares for every single one of us on his earth. He created us the way we are and he loves us and wants to have a relationship with us. Even though there are billions on this planet it tells us in the book of Jeremiah that “when you pray, I will listen.”

With so many people around and when life gets busy, it’s quite easy to feel insignificant. However God created each and every one of us for a purpose. He wants to get to know you and will be there whenever you need him. It’s amazing to think that even although each one of us is 1 in 7 billion, we are so significant to God.

Isaiah ch 46v4: “I will be your God throughout your lifetime - until your hair is white with age. I made you and I will care for you. I will carry you along and save you.”
