After Jesus had kept the Passover with His disciples they went to the garden of Gethsemane. He prayed to His Father, and we can see how the prospect of bearing our sin on the cross (remember He was sinless) really troubled Him. He prayed “If it be possible let this cup pass from Me – nevertheless not as I will but as You will”-but there was no other way to bring salvation to men and women and so He went back to His disciples (they were sleeping-sometimes we are like that –we sleep when we should be praying) and told them to arise He was going to be betrayed.
Then He was arrested and put through a trial-charged with claiming to be the son of God.
Meanwhile Peter who had said, several hours earlier that he wouldn’t deny the Lord, denied three times that he knew Him-even with oaths and curses. Seeing Jesus being arrested and beaten and spat upon probably terrified him. Just then the rooster crowed and Peter remembered Jesus predicting this and realized what he had done and the bible says “He went out and wept bitterly.”
We can be just like Peter-perhaps we don’t actually deny with oaths and curses that we know Jesus but then we probably are not in fear for our lives. Perhaps we just keep quiet when we should speak up for Him. When we do let Jesus down as Peter did it is good to feel as he did-genuinely sorry because its only then that we can be changed.
