"She will bear a son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins." Matthew ch1 v21.
At this time of year we are all hyped up for the gifts we receive and the gifts we need to buy for others, sometimes we're so hyped up about these things that we forget why we really celebrate Christmas. We all no doubt remember the nativity story the story of a baby boy being born and called Jesus, but why was he called Jesus. The answer is stated in the Bible several times, one of them already mentioned.
"For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved." John ch3 v17
Jesus wasn't called Jesus because he would carry out judgement on the world’s sin. He was called Jesus because he was to be the way by which sins would be forgiven and people could have a relationship with a holy and just God. This name is the only way to God.
"For there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. “Acts ch4 v12
So whatever you’re doing this Christmas, remember the real reason we celebrate Christmas. We celebrate Christmas because Jesus was born to save us from our sins, bringing us into a relationship with God.
