The Old testament Prophet Isaiah writing some 700 years before Christmas writes these words about Jesus:
“For to us a child is born, to us a child is given, and the government will be upon his shoulders and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
I was talking to someone this week who was clearly a good living, honest, salt of the earth type of guy but I couldn’t concentrate on what he was saying for trying to read what was written on his clothes.
There was a large picture of the crucifixion which as a Christian drew my attention. However the message above it unsettled me a bit.
It read “My God is bigger than your God”
There is a feeling out there that religion causes war and when you look at the middle east or to the events in Belfast this week you could understand that view.
The schoolboy mentality that starts with, “I’ll get my big brother to you” and ends with “my Dad is bigger than your Dad” seems to be carried onto the world stage as “My God is bigger than your God”.
Is that what Isaiah was saying?
“Wonderful Counselor” - “My God is Bigger than your God”?
“Mighty God” - “My God is bigger than your God”?
“Everlasting Father” - “My God is Bigger than your God”?
No I don’t think so... although be in no doubt he is an awesome and Holy God.
But is he "bigger than your God”?
My God - made himself nothing, *
My Go- took the very nature of a servant,
My God - humbled himself,
My God - became obedient to death, even death on a cross
My God is the Prince of peace.
