Good News - but don't tell anyone!

James

The bible produces all sorts of reactions from our society today. In the UK many, in fact, I would guess most would see it as old fashioned and having no relevance in our modern age. They perceive the message to be outdated, intolerant and made up. Some will talk about passages contradicting each other and will ridicule what they think it says. It has many enemies and critics who would banish it from our secular society indicating that it should not be promoted in any way, shape or form.

As a christian, who believes the bible to be the inspired Word Of God, I have a question. Why, if the bible is irrelevant, old fashioned and made up, is there so much opposition to it and why do people seek for it to be silenced? Actually this is 2 questions.

If you are reading this let me ask you 1 question directly – What do you actually know about the message of the bible? I know it’s a big book but have you ever taken the time to read it. Let me summarise the key message –

God created the whole universe and put man in the centre. He gave him everything he needed but the human race (through a man called Adam) rebelled and chose to go their own way. They chose to reject God. They did this all through history. Despite God’s patience and Grace, men and women of all races rejected God and still do. God’s plan from the beginning of the earth was to create a people who sought after Him and deal once and for all with the sin that caused man to reject God. The plan involved sending his only Son to give His life on the cross in Jerusalem more than 2000 years ago. A plan that meant the sin of the world being placed on Jesus as He died on the cross. The apostle Paul said “He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification”.

The motive for this great sacrifice was love. He loved us so much that He went to the cross.

Three days later after being buried, Jesus rose from the dead. I reckon from reading through the new testament Jesus was seen by more than 500 individuals after He was raised from the dead. More than 500 who would willingly testify to the fact that they had seen Jesus. As you read this you might be saying – well they would say that! Well would they? They would be testifying to something that at best, would mean they would be looked on as mad, they were persecuted and many because of their testimony paid the ultimate price by giving up their life.

By punishing His Son for our sakes God dealt with our sin and made it possible for him to accept us and forgive our sin. All we are asked to do, all God has ever asked us to do – is believe Him. Take Him at His Word and rely on Him. Paul also said “ if you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved”.

If we do this, God will do the rest. Give us a life to live for Him when we are on this earth and make us fit for heaven. The essence of being a christian is believing God and taking him at His Word. He did all this because He loved us and His motive throughout creation has, was and always will be love. This is the simple message of the bible.

What has man to fear from this message? Why is there so much opposition to the bible? It’s just as it has been since God breathed into Adam and gave him life. The taunt of Satan is the same as it has ever been “Has God said....”.

The greatest event this world has ever witnessed is the death, burial, resurrection and ascension of The Lord Jesus Christ. This Easter weekend we have a couple of services arranged to simply tell the message of the bible. Both meetings are at 7.30pm on Sat 23rd April & Sun 24th April in the Hall in Stevenston. Come along and hear more – we will give you a warm welcome.
